#WHAT IS MDAC VERSION 2.5 INSTALL#
The MSI to install SQL Server Native Client is available on the SQL Server media and in SQL Server Feature Packs.Īfter SQL Server 2012, the ODBC driver will be updated for the most recent server features, including Microsoft Windows Azure SQL Database, and released as the Microsoft ODBC Driver for SQL Server. After SQL Server 2012, the SQL Server Native Client OLE DB provider will no longer be included in SQL Server Native Client. The SQL Server Native Client OLE DB provider was included in SQL Server Native Client in SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 R2, and SQL Server 2012. (Microsoft/Windows Data Access Components are not updated for new features in SQL Server.) SQL Server Native Client can be used to create new applications or enhance existing applications that must take advantage of new SQL Server features. SQL Server Native Client is included in SQL Server. SQL Server Native Client is a stand-alone data access application programming interface (API) that is used for both OLE DB and ODBC.

The Jet OLE DB provider requires the version number of the provider in order to connect to an Access database.Īs a result, if your application specifies version 3.51 of the Jet OLE DB provider in the connection string and you install ADO by redistributing MDAC 2.1, you will be unable to connect to your Access database. MDAC 2.1 does not remove or overwrite version 3.51 of the Jet OLE DB provider if it was previously installed. MDAC versions 2.1 through 2.5 install version 4.0 of the Jet OLE DB provider but does not install version 3.51. MDAC 2.0 installs version 3.51 of the Jet OLE DB provider. The "3706: ADO could not find the specified provider" error appears when you try to connect to an Access database through the Jet 3.51 OLE DB provider.

Eliminating the database drivers can save you a bunch of overhead too. When going that route, I typically use a UDT to hold data, which makes storing and retrieving data a breeze, and very fast. This also depends on the amount of data you are working with.

What I mean is, many times you can actually get better performance without it, though it will take a bit of thought to come up with the file structure. This is why I avoid using mdb unless I really need it, aside from speed. Then if it's not going to work, prompt the user to install the needed file(s), and exit. One alternative might be if you can check the version when the program starts up. Still, I'm not entirely sure if you'd have a good way to check the version first, unless the package does this itself. If you can legally redistribute MDAC, then I believe you can edit the lst file to execute it upon installation (never tried). Obviously you wouldn't want to install something that would cause incompatabilities. I am not sure what the average computer has installed for that, and of course there are version issues to think about. Even if it is, that'd be a lot extra when it may not be often needed. Technically you can include any files you want, but I have not checked if MDAC is redistributable.
